It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, a perfect time to recognize special education teachers! Whether a child spends an hour a day in the resource room or all day in a specialized classroom, special education teachers have the training, dedication and compassion to help our children become the best version of themselves that they can be.

As parents of special need children, we have the right to highly qualified, passionate and dedicated teachers to support our children.

When my two children with Down syndrome leave for the day and get on that bus, there’s a whole team of professionals in whom I have complete confidence to take care of my children. I know they will be welcomed by individuals who are trained to understand their needs. They will be in the capable hands of a teachers who are passionate and engaged, willing and eager to meet my children where they are.

As parents, we are not fully equipped to be all of that to our children. We need the support of dedicated and engaged professionals to help our kids grow into independent adults.

The staff that teaches my kids are fully engaged in the well-being of my children. They text or call me throughout the day, asking for my input so they can make the best decision. I hear from them in the morning, afternoon and even in the evening when I’m getting the kids ready for bed. I know it’s not a 6, 8 or even 10 hour job. It’s a full time commitment.

So this Teacher Appreciation Week, here’s my message to special education teachers everywhere:

There are not words to say how wonderful you are, how much I appreciate you and the value you provide to not just my family, but the whole community. The whole world benefits from our kids becoming the best they can be and it’s special education teachers who go the extra mile to make sure this happens. Thank you. I appreciate you. I see what you are doing. You have my gratitude from the depth of my heart.
