For Dads of Children with Special Needs on Father’s Day

Dear Husband,

Years ago, when we got married, we made the traditional vows of “sickness and health”. I don’t know about you, but I was thinking of getting old together, when it’s natural to have a few ailments. Never once did it cross my mind that the sickness would involve our child. How could we have known that promising to stick it out would mean holding each other through many diagnoses, walking our child back to surgery after surgery, and taking turns spending nights with him in the hospital? Life has been more complicated than we could have imagined that day we looked each other in the eye and pledged undying love.

It seems that the trials that came close to breaking us, have only brought us closer.

We often brush past each other, tag-teaming to manage our home and lives. I often take it for granted that you know this, but I couldn’t give our children my best without you beside me giving your best too.

I love how we work together, brainstorming and putting ideas into action. I love how you find ways to make our home and lives easier and better by adapting our surroundings for our kids. You can see when I need a break, and you make sure I take it. When I struggle to take care of myself, you take care of me. You give our family the best of yourself, every day, year after year.

While it’s usually me at the IEP meetings and doctor and therapy appointments, you are always with me behind the scenes, observing, planning and making suggestions. I can count on you to talk me down and back me up when things go awry. Your common sense and practical approach compliment my passion and idealism. Our strengths combine to be more powerful together than either of us are alone. Together we are a force to be reckoned with, a dynamic duo if ever there was one!

You are the real deal, my sweet husband. Your faithfulness, loyalty, strength and humor bring joy to my life. We are partners in such a special marriage and family. Not many can do what we have done and keep doing daily. This Father’s Day, you deserve recognition for going above and beyond any and all expectations and doing so with love and joy. Thank you for loving us all deeply and completely with both words and actions. You are simply wonderful.

With Love,

Your wife
