One of the goals of healthcare professionals is to to heal wounds, prevent complications associated with wounds, and preserve our ability to function. There are two general types of wounds: acute wounds and chronic wounds. Take this course to learn more about the stages of wound healing, risk factors that can impede healing, and ways nurses can decrease those risks.

Learning Objectives

After completing this free online course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the difference between acute and chronic wounds.
  • Describe each of the four stages of wound healing.
  • Describe each of the three types of wound healing (primary, secondary and tertiary intention).
  • Identify the risk factors that can impede wound healing.
  • Describe actions that nurses can take to ensure proper wound healing.

All healthcare professionals who come into contact with patients that may have acute or chronic wounds, including:
