Enteral tube feeding has become common across a range of healthcare settings, including in the home. Advances in treatment and technology have given us new design and feature options, increasing the complexity of feeding tube care. In this 30-minute course, healthcare providers and family caregivers alike will learn easy techniques for daily care, as well as troubleshooting tips for various problems.

Learning Objectives

After completing this free online course, you should be able to:

  • List the steps required to properly clean and maintain various types of enteral feeding tubes.
  • Identify and address signs of irritation or infection at the tube entry/exit site.
  • List steps required to flush feeding tubes.
  • Describe how to perform weekly maintenance on the balloon of a balloon gastrostomy tube.
  • List the steps in the daily maintenance checklist.
  • Describe troubleshooting of various problems that can occur with enteral feeding tubes, including patient distress, pain, tube leakage, dislodgement, and clogging of tubes.

To complete this activity and obtain CE credit, you must do the following:

  1. View the program “Enteral Feeding Tubes: A Guide for Nurses, Part 3: Daily Care and Troubleshooting.”
  2. Read the Course Introduction/Disclosures section in its entirety.
  3. Read the course material.
  4. Complete the Post Test with a score of 80% or more.
  5. Submit the online activity evaluation form.

Upon completion you have the option to take the course post-test. A score of 80% or higher will qualify you for your certificate of completion which you can print for your records.

Once you’ve created an account, you can use that login to take all other Shield-U courses that will be released this year! A history of completed courses will be kept for your convenience in your account.
