The skin is the body’s barrier to the outside world. It protects us from temperature extremes; from weather conditions such as rain, sleet, snow, wind, and ice; protects against exposure to radiation, and from infection.

Wound care in a healthcare or virtually any environment is crucial. The process of wound healing occurs in four stages, no matter what the cause or type. In this course, you will learn about the importance of proper wound care, varying hygiene methods, personal protective equipment and basic but important wound care practices.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Explain the difference between acute and chronic wounds
  • Describe each of the four stages of the wound healing process
  • Describe each of the three types of wound healing (primary, secondary and tertiary intention)
  • Identify the risk factors that can hinder wound healing
  • Describe actions that nurses can take to ensure proper wound healing
