0.5 contact hour of continuing nursing education credit is available for this course, Confidentiality: HIPAA Regulations.

Healthcare professionals are required by law to protect personal health information. For providers to uphold this ethical and moral obligation, it is important to know the differences between privacy and confidentiality.

Privacy is the patient’s right to keep their health information private. This means that the provider needs permission to give the health information to anyone including family members, employers, insurance, or other healthcare workers.

Confidentiality means that the provider will not disclose personal health information unless the patient gives written consent.

There are many concerns when it comes to keeping patient personal health information confidential including technology. Other concerns:

  • Conversations between provider and patient in a public space.
  • Leaving phone messages regarding personal health information.
  • Sharing personal health information with anyone who inquires.
  • Sharing personal health information with the press about a celebrity.
