Fall Prevention in Long Term Care: A Comprehensive Fall Prevention Program

Serious injuries from falls can include brain trauma, fracture, joint dislocation, hemorrhage, and death. The Joint Commission has determined the following to be root causes of such falls:

  • Malfunction or misuse of alert equipment such as bed alarms
  • Incomplete orientation of new staff
  • Inadequate supervision of care providers in training
  • Insufficient education of staff, patients, residents, and even families
  • Unavailable or delayed medical care

This course will teach you how to minimize the risk of fall-related injuries in your facility by planning and implementing a fall prevention program.

Learning Objectives 

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify the purpose and duties of a call prevention committee.
  • Explain the important of defining risk assessment policies and procedures within the facility.
  • Describe the importance of defining fall prevention protocols, educating fellow staff members, and monitoring the effectiveness of protocols once they have been put in place.
  • Outline important points to cover in a post-fall assessment and root cause analysis.
