Infection Control in Healthcare: Precautions

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),  the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have all developed precautions to prevent and control the spread of infectious disease. It is important for healthcare professionals to understand and practice these precautions to keep themselves, coworkers, and patients safe. 

Learning Objectives 

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
  • Describe the CDC’s Standard Precautions
  • Explain the elements of the CDC’s Transmission-based Precautions
  • Describe the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act
  • Implement infection prevention practice strategies, including handling sharps, linen and trash, contaminated spills, and addressing lab issues
