As a co-author of the SCERTS Model, she lectures internationally and provides consultation to Using the SCERTS Practice Principles to Design Educational Programming for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder across Developmental Stages
Course Description: The focus of this full-day course will be on application of the SCERTS practice principles to support effective programming for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. A brief discussion of the learning style differences in children with ASD and related contemporary neuroscience will be followed by practical strategies for differentiating instruction. Strategies will be applicable for children who are predominantly using gestures to communicate, children who are at the emerging language stage, and children who are at conversational levels. The SCERTS practice principles help to ensure that children are: 1) maintaining active engagement in natural routines in the classroom, 2) making smooth and independent transitions across natural routines, and 3) expressing their emotion and using coping strategies in a conventional manner. Video case studies will be integrated to illustrate how to develop programming using the SCERTS practice principles.
Intended Audience: This training is most appropriate for
◦Families and service providers who are interested in learning about SCERTS for the first time but with a focus on the practice principles on learning accommodations in the classroom.
◦Families and service providers who have already participated in an introduction to SCERTS, but are seeking a review as well as efficient strategies for utilizing the model to develop IEP goals and programming.
