World Cancer Day 2014

This Tuesday, February 4th, Shield HealthCare celebrates cancer survivors and those who support them on the road to recovery.

Each year, Shield HealthCare is a proud corporate sponsor of the Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley. Benefiting the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life is an overnight community fundraising walk that raises funds for cancer research, promotes awareness in the community, celebrates cancer survivors and honors friends and loved ones we have lost.

This World Cancer Day, organizations around the world are focusing on reducing the stigma and debunking these four myths that surround cancer:

Myth #1: We don’t need to talk about cancer. False!  Cancer is not easy to talk about, but in many cases openly discussing the disease can improve outcomes, increase community support, and drive research and funding in the fight to cure cancer.

Myth #2: Cancer… There are no signs or symptoms.  False!  There are warning signs for many different cancers, which makes it even more important that we are discussing what symptoms to look for – especially since early detection is so important.

Myth #3: There is nothing I can do about cancer.  False!  In 1985, a dedicated individual raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society by walking and running a track for 24 hours. Nearly 30 years later, the Relay for Life movement has raised almost $5 billion worldwide in the fight against cancer. From  raising awareness to sharing information about screening and early detection, our actions make an impact in the fight against cancer.

Myth #4: I don’t have the right to cancer care.  False! Everyone has the right to be treated for cancer, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or income level. Sixty years ago, one out of every three people diagnosed with cancer survived. Today, that number has doubled – in part because the American Cancer Society is committed to fighting cancer around the world.
