A note to new ostomates
Following surgery, your diet will be introduced slowly. Ostomy diets are individualized and do not have to be restrictive. Just as some foods prior to surgery affected your digestive tract, it is likely that these foods will continue to affect you with your ostomy. After surgery, you may want to try one food at a time to see how your body will react.
Ostomy nutrition tips:
• Eat slowly
• Chew food well
• Eat regularly scheduled, small meals
• Introduce new foods one at a time
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Initially try foods without skins/seeds
If gas is a problem, possible food causes may include: beans, beer, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carbonated beverages, cauliflower and onions
Are you experiencing obstruction? These foods can remain partially digested and can clog your stoma: Cabbage, celery, coconut, corn, dried fruit, green beans, green peppers, lettuce, mushrooms, nuts, olives, peas, pickles, pineapple, popcorn, raw vegetables, sauerkraut, seeds, spinach, skins from fruits and vegetables. Eliminate these foods if you are prone to obstructions.
If increased odor is present, consider avoiding foods such as asparagus, eggs, fish, garlic and onions.
Be sure to contact your doctor if you are experiencing unusual symptoms or discomfort.
