Swimming after you have ostomy surgery was one of most prominent things on our Ostomy Lifestyle Specialist, Laura Cox’s mind when she was released from the hospital. The idea of not getting to head into a pool or the ocean ever again can be very depressing. But! Most wafers are waterproof, so once you are recovered from surgery, a dip in the pool should be in order. In this swimming with an ostomy video, you can learn all about what you can do to feel confident in the water.

Dear Laura, I wear a two piece ostomy bag. I need help with concealing an ostomy bag. When I move around my shirt hikes up and the tip of the bag peeks out from under my shirt.
Tom
Hi Tom, I have a few suggestions that may help!

First, I'm wondering if a stealth belt would be a good option for you. This is a black belt that you can conveniently tuck your pouch...

  1. Thank you that’s great! I am not really worried about the ostomy showing at all but the facts of different behaviors in different types of water is just what I needed to know! Ostomy Nov 2015

  2. Laura what can I use during intimate moments with my wife to prevent my pouch from hanging down in the way?….I have been using a ace bandage to wrap around my waist and tuck the pouch underneath. Any suggestions?

  3. Hello, any advise would be great! I have tried hy-tape (pink tape), press and seal wrap, 2″ plastic tape, other water proof tapes … everything once wet comes right off my skin including my ostomy wafer! Do you know of any products, like a band, that would wrap around my body that would be water proof?
Thank you for your time and advise!,

    1. Hi Stacie! Yes, we do know of a waterproof wrap. We had this recommendation from one of our community members, Sophie: “Please see Drypro they are the only providers of a swim belt that keeps your Ostomy completely dry when swimming or showering.” You can find more suggestions about keeping your stoma and pouch dry in our article, Tips for Swimming with an Ostomy – More Security. Best of luck and enjoy these warm months! -Aimee, Shield HealthCare
