The objective of wound care is to heal the lesion in as short a time as possible, with minimal pain and scarring  – and to return the person to the highest level of health and function possible. There are numerous modalities available for the management of chronic wounds, ranging from simple dressings to the use of specialized equipment to surgical interventions. In this course, you will learn about wound treatments that are appropriate for different types of wounds.

Learning Objectives

After completing this free online course, you should be able to:

  • Choose appropriate treatment modalities based on wound type and goal(s) for treatment.
  • Describe and perform appropriate wound bed preparation.
  • Explain the different types of sharp debridement.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of different types of wound dressings.
  • Explain how to properly perform a dressing change.
  • Define various treatment modalities, including negative pressure wound therapy, electrical stimulation, hyperbaric, and ultrasound therapy.
