UCSF to Open $1.5 Billion, Eco-Friendly Medical Complex

Construction is all but done at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, with a grand opening for the $1.5 billion complex slated for Feb 1, officials said.

The complex includes the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital and UCSF Bakar Cancer Hospital, with a total of 289 beds on the 60.2-acre campus.

But it’s the high-tech touches that really set apart the renovation. For example, the facility has a fleet of robot couriers that deliver meals, linens and medications to the rooms, media walls in the rooms that allow for videocalls with families and even a virtual reality element to its imaging suite. For example, children can experience the imagery of a San Francisco trolley ride while receiving an MRI.
