Story by Jeanine B., Home Health Nurse:

“What makes caregiving rewarding to me as a home health professional, is the wealth of contact with people who are facing some of life’s most challenging lessons: illness, pain, disability, dementia and impending death. I am honored to be of service. Getting a smile from a patient who is feeling isolated due to dementia, decreasing a patient’s emotional or physical pain with words or medications and holding the hand of someone whose family member is actively dying, lights up my soul. In my experiences, there is a dynamic exchange of compassion and wisdom between my patients and me.

My patients teach me about the delicate balance between living and enjoying life and letting go of life when it is time to die. In my travels from home to home, my patients give me the strength to believe in the goodness of the human spirit and open my eyes to the powerful impact that comes from caring for one another. In return, I bring my patients comfort, kindness and empathy.

Even though there can be much sadness in my profession, and some days are long and exhaustive, I’m glad I am a nurse. As my journey continues, I look forward to more rewarding experiences…”
