How DME Providers Improve CGM Patient Compliance & Outcomes

Diabetes patients receiving continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) supplies from DME providers achieve significantly better clinical outcomes compared to pharmacy channels.

A recent study published in Clinical Diabetes, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Diabetes Association, reports that higher treatment adherence rates are associated with DME providers that focus on managing diabetes with clinical support and educational programs.

The research uncovered striking differences in patient adherence rates and demonstrated that patients are more likely to stay on physician-prescribed therapy when using a DME provider. By 12 months, Medicare and Medicare Advantage patients showed 78% adherence through DME providers, compared to 64% through pharmacies. Commercial insurance patients demonstrated similar patterns, with DME channels achieving 60% adherence versus 48% through pharmacies.

In addition to better health outcomes, DME providers are driving down costs and reducing healthcare utilization substantially:

  • Patients using DME providers saved Medicare/ Medicare Advantage plans 25% annually in total care costs
    • An annual savings of $3,875 compared to pharmacy patients ($11,154 versus $15,029)
  • Commercial insurance patients using DME services required fewer emergency room and inpatient visits (8 days versus 11 days)

Dr. Steven Edelman, professor of medicine at UC San Diego and study co-author, emphasizes the direct connection between CGM adherence and improved patient outcomes. “Higher adherence rates with continuous glucose monitors are directly linked to improved glycemic control, reduced complications, and lower health care costs.”

The study challenges recent industry moves to expand pharmacy distribution channels for CGM, suggesting these efforts may inadvertently lead to a reduction in therapy adherence and higher total health care costs. The findings reinforce the added value of DME providers’ comprehensive approach to diabetes management.
