Congratulations to Runner-Up winner Lynda T. S. from Ohio.

Prior to our wedding, Michael fell, crashing his head on a brick ledge. He was treated for a TBI and underwent spinal surgery. Most marriages start off in bliss. Ours immediately took unforeseen turns as complications arose. Neurological damage led to more falls and in 2014 he fell backwards down the basement steps, crashing his head in the same place. Neurological pathways rapidly deteriorated, resulting in automatic failure and many secondary complications.

If this wasn’t enough, back in August this year, he was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that already metastasized throughout his entire body. Michael valiantly fought, despite suffering greatly the next couple months. He died on November 26.

Becoming a caregiver at the beginning of marriage changes everything the world’s plastered view of romance taught. Caring for a man so innocent and gentle in spirit, robbed of his independence at such a young age, I learned to look past the mirages put before us and commit to a deeper love; to give every part of who I was, then dig down deeper to give more. I learned I wasn’t enough but I could reach out and grab ahold of resources to help. I learned that caring for his needs was the greatest intimate love I could ever give! Seeing the look in his eyes when he no longer could speak and was suffering in so much pain, never will I doubt the immense love we shared.
