In this video, Shield HealthCare’s Ostomy Lifestyle Specialist, Laura Cox, shows how to empty your ostomy pouch. Laura talks about different positions you can assume to empty your ostomy bag. There are many different ways to empty, so find which position feels right for you. There is no wrong way to empty an ostomy pouch.
Laura also shares tips on how to keep the pouch clean, avoid toilet bowl splashing and shows how to use deodorizing drops. These steps are optional, but may make future emptying easier.

Suggestion: If you are anticipating surgery and want to practice emptying an ostomy pouch, you can obtain samples from a local support group or ostomy nurse. Apply the ostomy pouch to your abdomen and fill it with water or apple sauce. This will give you an idea of what it’s like to empty the pouch after ostomy surgery.
