In this video from our Ostomy Lifestyle Specialist, Laura Cox, you can find tips for returning to work after ostomy surgery. Laura talks about reasons why returning to work may actually help you in your recovery, and how to approach speaking to your employer both before and after surgery. Watch as Laura gives tips on what you should bring with you to work after surgery and things to keep in mind.

These tips include:

  • Apply for a temporary handicap parking pass because you may still be quite tired during your surgery recovery, so walking long distances from the parking lot to your desk may be too exhausting during your first days or weeks back.
  • Before returning to work, try on some of your work clothes. Your abdomen may still be sore, so you’ll want to wear looser options to work the first couple week after returning.
  • Keep an emergency ostomy kit in your desk or in your car, though if the temperature starts to rise, you don’t want to leave the supplies in your car as they can melt.
