The flu season is hard on everyone. But those with a colostomy or ileostomy are especially in danger. Ostomates often have a lowered immune system, making them more susceptible to viruses. On top of that, ostomates need to be very careful to stay as hydrated as possible, and the flu can dehydrate people quickly. Our colons do our “drinking” for us — that is, colons remove most of the water from the food we consume. With some or all of the colon gone, it can be more difficult to stay hydrated. In this Surviving Flu Season with an Ostomy video, Laura goes over the various ways to stay hydrated, and the best ways to keep yourself from getting sick in the first place.
